FSC, bankers say banks are strong PDF Print E-mail

Bankers are hoping to help customers sleep better this week, letting them know they are doing just fine.

Following months of challenging times in the banking sector, including the closing of the first indigenous bank and most recently rumours of more banks closing, the Bankers Association and the Financial Services Committee have released a joint statement reassuring the public banks operating in the Turks and Caicos Islands are strong.

Representatives from several local hotels, all members of the Turks and Caicos Hotel & Tourism Association, spent recent days knocking on the doors of dozens of travel agents in the Southeastern U.S. , continuing on their mission to promote the TCI as a preferable holiday destination.

In June the TCHTA arranged a sales blitz, including sales calls and evening receptions/presentations, targeting major travel agencies in Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

It was a celebration that many anticipated, the official grand opening of the International Banking Group.

Signaling hope on the horizon for financially better times, IBG hosted an event July 24 to celebrate opening to the public.

The event was attended by acting Gov. Mark Capes, members of the governor’s Advisory Council, members of the Financial Services Commission, members of the bank’s Board of Directors, staff, shareholders, members of the press, customers and suppliers to the bank.

Rules of the game

Week after week this column espouses the importance and value of marketing your tourism business online: Web sites, e-mail, search engines, social media, online travel agencies (OTAs), etc., etc.

For sure, the Internet does provide the most cost effective way to reach and influence would-be clients of your property or business. It’s high tech, but it’s also “low touch” from a service perspective.

Recent studies — and our own experience running the only locally-based reservations contact center in the Turks and Caicos — have shown that as ubiquitous, easy and popular as online shopping is, particularly for travel-related services, consumers are gravitating back to “old fashioned” channels when it comes time to make a travel purchase.
