Turks and Caicos Reef Fund launched PDF Print E-mail

Two dedicated divers and part-time Turks and Caicos Islands residents have formed the Turks and Caicos Reef Fund to raise money to compliment and supplement government efforts to help preserve the country’s pristine coral reefs.

The Turks and Caicos Islands government has extended until Jan. 31 the deadline for tenders to mine 321,000 cubic yards of sand for construction purposes from six different areas.

Tourists tend to flock to the Turks and Caicos Islands to enjoy its 366 square miles of perfect sandy beaches.

Now the government hopes to make money selling sand from underwater deposits to buoy sinking government revenues. This marks a departure from the former practice of mining sand from beaches, which was banned Nov. 1.

For the third year in a row, the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association is organizing a “TCI Shines” campaign to clean up the island of Providenciales in time for the holidays, and your help is needed.

On Saturday, Dec. 11, starting at 6 a.m., anyone who cares about the environment we live in is being asked to come out and help clean up the TCI.

TCI Protected Areas Series

The fp is publishing a series of articles on the Turks and Caicos Islands Protected Area System to increase public awareness and respect for the beauty and value of this "beautiful by nature" country.

The authors, marine ecologist Marsha Pardee and terrestrial ecologist Kathleen Wood, are long-time TCI residents and respected scientists in their fields.
